There really was an International Banana Festival Parade.
The people of Fulton, Kentucky and South Fulton, Tennessee held one every year for
thirty years to celebrate their claim to the title, "Banana Capital of the World".
They called themselves that because, at one time, seventy percent of all the bananas
brought to the United States were shipped to the twin cities by train for distribution to other regions of the Country.
The last International Banana Festival was held in September of 1992. The Saturday
morning parade was long and lots of fun. the pudding was scrumptious. The day was simply unforgettable!
These words and pictures have described what people saw, heard, and tasted that day.
There were many good parts to the parade, but only one Best Part!
This just in: The Banana Festival Lives!
The people of Fulton and South Fulton continued to have festivals each Fall but
stopped using the Banana theme until 2011. In 2012, they celebrated the 50th anniversary of the first festival and began having them again.
